meters. And what began as a sudden burst of inspiration in the middle of the night turned into a journey that taught us so much about the mountains and about the Norwegian way of understanding the world. <\/p><p>Norway is a country that wins you over from the very first moment. Its fjords, its endless forests, the summer light that refuses to fade and the warmth of its people make it a destination unlike any other. But it is also a country with its own rules, its own codes and a few particularities worth knowing in advance if you want to avoid surprises. This is not just an environmental question: it is a straightforwardly economic one.<\/p><p>In our case, renting an electric car for six days with fully comprehensive insurance included cost us 325 euros, a genuinely competitive price by Norwegian standards. Had we chosen a petrol or diesel vehicle, that same rental could easily have doubled or tripled. The reason is that Norway has a very aggressive tax policy that places heavy duties on fossil fuels while massively incentivising electric mobility.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\">The charging infrastructure in Norway is excellent, and you will find charging points at practically every petrol station, service area, car park and hotel. That said, there are a couple of things to bear in mind:<\/p><ul class=\"[li_&amp;]:mb-0 [li_&amp;]:mt-1 [li_&amp;]:gap-1 [&amp;:not(:last-child)_ul]:pb-1 [&amp;:not(:last-child)_ol]:pb-1 list-disc flex flex-col gap-1 pl-8 mb-3 print:block print:space-y-1\" dir=\"ltr\"><li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\"><strong>Download the charging app before you set off.<\/strong> The charging system is not as intuitive as a conventional fuel pump: you will need a specific app (usually the one belonging to the charging point operator) to start a session. It is far more convenient to have it set up before you leave home.<\/li><li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\"><strong>Do not let the battery drop below 20 %.<\/strong> In Norway this advice matters even more, because some roads are long and run through sparsely populated areas. Keep an eye on the gauge and recharge with a margin, not at the last minute.<\/li><li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\"><strong>A full charge can cost under 15 euros<\/strong>, which makes your total energy spend over the whole trip surprisingly low.<\/li><\/ul><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\">If you have never driven an automatic, which is how rental EVs usually come, do not worry. Adapting takes minutes. Norway has one of the strictest speed enforcement systems in Europe, and the consequences of ignoring it are severe.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\">Exceeding the limit by just 20 km\/h can mean a <strong>fine of 800 euros<\/strong>, plus a court appearance. This is not an exaggeration: it is the reality. Speed cameras are frequent and the Norwegian police apply penalties with a rigour that can strike us Mediterraneans as remarkable.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\">The most common limits are:<\/p><ul class=\"[li_&amp;]:mb-0 [li_&amp;]:mt-1 [li_&amp;]:gap-1 [&amp;:not(:last-child)_ul]:pb-1 [&amp;:not(:last-child)_ol]:pb-1 list-disc flex flex-col gap-1 pl-8 mb-3 print:block print:space-y-1\" dir=\"ltr\"><li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\"><strong>50 km\/h<\/strong> in built-up areas.<\/li><li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\"><strong>80 km\/h<\/strong> on ordinary roads outside towns, very common on mountain roads and in rural areas.<\/li><li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\"><strong>100 to 110 km\/h<\/strong> on dual carriageways and approaches to the major cities.<\/li><\/ul><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\">Our advice is to drive calmly, enjoy the landscape, which absolutely deserves it, and not be in a hurry. In mountain areas, many huts, trails and hiking access points are linked by roads belonging to private landowners or local management organisations, which charge a fee for their use.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\">In our case, reaching the <strong>Spiterstulen<\/strong> hut (the starting point for the Galdh\u00f8piggen ascent) meant driving roughly twenty kilometres of private track that has to be paid for through a specific app. The car park on the flat area beside the trailhead also carries its own charge.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\">Not paying has real consequences. Norwegians apply the rules with admirable consistency, and penalties for unpaid tolls can be considerably higher than the original fee. Before entering any mountain track or car park, look for the payment signage and make sure you have completed the process correctly.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\">The same applies to many car parks in cities, mountain huts and popular trailheads: always paid, always via app or ticket machine.
