It is January 2026. I return from my trip to the Andes without having achieved either of the two objectives I had set myself: I did not summit Ojos del Salado, nor did I reach the summit of Aconcagua. I know I am capable of climbing them; I am aware of some mistakes made during the expedition that I will turn into lessons learned, and at the same time I know that before tackling 7,000-metre peaks I first need to consolidate my experience between 4,500 and 6,500 metres. Amid these thoughts and reflections, somewhere over the Atlantic on my flight home, Elbrus comes to mind. Located in Russian territory and standing at 5,642 metres, it fits perfectly with this new approach. <\/p>

Russia is neither France nor Italy. So during June I meet Jordi Guasch on two or three occasions to arrange the Russian visa and gather the rest of the documentation required to enter the former Soviet territory (insurance, a local contact, among other things). Within a week we receive confirmation that everything has been processed correctly, so on 6 September we will land in the Russian Federation. <\/p>

July and August pass quickly: Norway\u2019s Galdh\u00f8piggen, a Mediterranean cruise with the family, working hard to get everything ahead before my departure, training to reach the summit in good physical and mental condition…<\/p>

The expedition consists of four people: Jordi Guasch, who has already appeared in other chronicles and has joined me on several trips, including Bolivia, the Alps, the Andes, Kilimanjaro and Ararat.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

We will also be joined by Francisco Abell\u00e1n from Murcia, with whom I have been in regular contact during the weeks leading up to the trip despite never having met him in person. He has been preparing conscientiously for this ascent for two years. He has travelled little and has only left Spain once, precisely to climb Morocco\u2019s Toubkal, but he possesses one of the greatest treasures a person can have: tremendous willpower, accompanied by enormous faith and determination to reach the summit. I have no doubt that he will succeed. <\/p>

The final member of the group, and also the oldest, is Lu\u00eds Bozzo. Born in Peru but resident in Spain for more than 30 years, he is an engineer by profession, a man of great wisdom who discovered his passion for the mountains only relatively recently. Since then he has not stopped: expeditions to Toubkal, Kilimanjaro, Aconcagua, Mera Peak… an adventurer who has challenged both the clock and biology. <\/p>

We do not all travel to Russia together and, in my case, I leave Barcelona with Jordi Guasch. We have arranged to meet at 5:00 in the morning at Terminal 1 of Barcelona-El Prat Airport, as our flight leaves at 7:30 and, since we have luggage to check in, we need to arrive with plenty of time. Istanbul is not our final air destination: we will have a stopover there of just 65 minutes before catching our second flight to Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia. <\/p>

We are extremely lucky: our second flight will depart from the very same gate at which we have just arrived. Given the sheer size of Istanbul Airport, that feels like winning the lottery, although I suppose flying with the same airline, Turkish Airlines, has helped. <\/p>

We arrive in Tbilisi, Georgia, in the early afternoon and a taxi takes us to the hotel, which I deliberately chose away from the city centre in the hope of getting a better night\u2019s rest. We leave our luggage in the room and head into the centre, allowing chance to guide us towards the city\u2019s main sights: the Clock Tower, Sameba Cathedral (the third-tallest Orthodox cathedral in the world), the Bridge of Peace, as well as various streets and corners where the avant-garde blends harmoniously with the past. We make excellent use of the few hours we have for sightseeing in a city that, it must be said, feels completely safe, and where we cannot miss the local speciality, khachapuri: delicious boat-shaped bread filled with melted cheese and topped with an egg yolk and butter. <\/p>

With full stomachs and local wine running through our veins, we return to the hotel. It has been a packed day and, after two flights and the discovery of a beautiful European capital, it is time to draw the blinds. Tomorrow we will meet the rest of the group and together set foot on Russian soil. The time has come. <\/p>

Jordi and I meet for breakfast at 8:00 and, without delay, finish preparing our luggage before getting into the taxi at 8:45 to return to Tbilisi Airport. There we meet Lu\u00eds and Francisco, who arrive around 45 minutes after us. We have time to talk, as there is still a while before the check-in desks open. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The flight to Mineralnye Vody, Russia, takes barely 60 minutes and from the air we enjoy privileged views of the Caucasus mountain range. Some of us, probably carried away by anticipation, claim to have spotted Elbrus. <\/p>

I step off the last stair of the aircraft and now, at last, I am standing on Russian soil. It commands respect. I feel equal parts excitement and unease, and we cannot forget that the country is at war with Ukraine and is an authoritarian regime, however much it may present itself as a democracy. <\/p>

I am the first of the four of us to pass through immigration. Everything goes reasonably smoothly; mountaineers generally seem to be looked upon favourably. Outside the airport, a van picks us up around 15 or 20 minutes late and takes us on a three-hour journey to Terskol \u2014 allowing for the obvious differences, the Russian Chamonix. I really like the scenery: we travel through a spectacular valley along which the powerful Baksan River flows. <\/p>

Terskol is a village at 2,144 metres in the Kabardino-Balkaria region of southern Russia and is a key starting point for expeditions to Elbrus.<\/p>

We check into the hotel, where it becomes very clear that in Russia they want absolutely all documentation in physical paper form, so if you travel to the former Soviet country, it is important to bring everything printed. Once settled into the hotel, my legs are asking for movement, so we go for a walk around the village and take the opportunity to do a little shopping. <\/p>

At 19:00 we are in the hotel reception, where we have arranged to meet our Russian guide, Ivan Alexeev. He is around 40, looks physically fit and seems like a good person, so I have a feeling we have drawn the winning ticket in the always difficult lottery of mountain guides. <\/p>

After a substantial dinner, Ivan comes to our rooms to check our mountain equipment. In my case, he advises me to rent slightly warmer trousers than the ones I have brought, although he considers everything else suitable. It is Monday and the programme includes an acclimatisation hike of around 13 kilometres and six hours, first to the Maid\u2019s Braids waterfall at 2,700 metres and then on to the observatory at 3,100 metres. The scenery is spectacular, with vegetation reaching almost 3,000 metres, and from the observatory we can make out on the horizon what will become our Base Camp for the next few days. <\/p>

The excursion takes up the morning and part of the afternoon, and we arrive back at the hotel at around 16:00. In short, lunch and dinner almost merge into one, although we manage to delay the latter until 19:30. With full stomachs, we return to the room, finish packing and go to sleep. The acclimatisation phase in Terskol is over; from tomorrow onwards our base of operations will be Elbrus Base Camp at 3,888 metres. <\/p>

We have breakfast and shortly afterwards a van picks us up and takes us to a ski resort. However, we will not travel up to Elbrus Base Camp using the lifts, the usual option for mountaineers. Because of maintenance work, we will instead make the journey in a truck with a trailer, which for an hour and a half tackles steep gradients of 30\u201335% before stopping at 3,888 metres, our home for the next four days. <\/p>

We have had to wait a good two hours for the truck, so we do not finish lunch until around 15:00. We are late, very late, and today\u2019s programme will be demanding on the body. The truck has taken us from around 2,100 metres to Base Camp at 3,888 metres, and the acclimatisation programme calls for an excursion up to 4,700 metres, where the famous Pastukhov Rocks are located. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

In a single day we will go from 2,100 metres to 4,700 metres \u2014 a gain of 2,600 metres, which is considerable. The guide tells us that he has never set off so late to complete this route, so we take our headlamps. <\/p>

The route presents no technical difficulty, and we follow a track that runs more or less straight upwards. The gradients are significant. I have decided to go without poles to get used to managing adversity and discomfort. I am certainly not cruising without them, but neither am I struggling, and I also handle the weather reasonably well: at 4,700 metres the wind is blowing hard, and temperatures fall to minus 20 degrees. Within the group there is some disagreement about the pace we should maintain, but we talk it through, clear things up and everything is fine. Communication is essential in high mountains because moments of tension arise and there needs to be complete transparency between the different members of an expedition. <\/p>

We arrive late at Base Camp, at around 21:00. The outing will have been very useful for improving our acclimatisation, although in my case it has come at a high price: several wounds caused by my La Sportiva G2 boots, which are very stiff and which I do not normally wear. <\/p>

I like Russian food. The first course is usually a highly calorific, energy-rich soup and the second is generally meat accompanied by vegetables. The cook does not speak English and addresses us only with a universal \u201cnyam nyam\u201d. The Russian world feels rather closed, although everyone we have met has been generous and kind to us. The war and the Russian political system are completely taboo subjects. After dinner we chat for a while with the others and retire to our dormitories, four-bed rooms that are comfortable and perfectly insulated from the outside. Morning comes. I have not slept particularly well, although that is normal for me on expeditions because I find it difficult to adapt to challenging sleeping environments. <\/p>

The schedule is taking shape. We will not attempt the summit tomorrow, Thursday; the chosen day, because the weather forecast is better, will be Friday 11 September. Every choice has its pros and cons. We will be putting everything on one card because we have no reserve days \u2014 on Saturday we already begin the journey home \u2014 but it gives us an extra day of acclimatisation, which will personally suit me very well because rapid acclimatisation has never been one of my strengths. <\/p>

Today, Wednesday, we spend the morning on mountain-safety lessons and self-arrest practice. Our guide, Ivan Alexeev, gives us an excellent tutorial and I particularly like the fact that, besides being a great professional, he takes a very cautious and preventive approach to risk management. The morning flies by and, as well as learning a great deal, I have a lot of fun. <\/p>

While we are having our \u201cnyam nyam\u201d in the Base Camp dining room, Ivan insists that from now until summit day our priorities must be to rest, hydrate and eat. It sounds easy, but it is not \u2014 especially for someone like me, who tends towards constant activity, both physical and mental. So I recall the lessons learned on previous expeditions and focus on my breathing. <\/p>

After resting for a while in the room and talking with the others, I go out with Lu\u00eds and Jordi to stretch our legs and move the body gently.<\/p>

One of the strengths a good mountaineer needs is patience and the ability to wait. Now is the time to cultivate calm, stillness and serenity. <\/p>

Immediately after dinner I realise that I am not at 100% energy. I ask for a thermometer, and it reads 37 degrees: a slight fever. Now it really is time to rest, and I ask \u201cMother Earth\u201d, please, to have me in good condition for Catalonia\u2019s National Day, which is also our D-Day. <\/p>

Today is Thursday, the day before the ascent, and although I still have a slight fever, I feel stronger than I did last night. I do not want to stay inside my sleeping bag; I need to send myself messages of activation, so after breakfast I go for a slow, relaxed walk with Lu\u00eds. We have developed a lovely relationship and have had some very interesting conversations throughout the trip. He is a person with a great deal of experience and accumulated knowledge, and exchanging views with him is always enriching. <\/p>

We reach a bench with privileged views of Elbrus, and, during our contemplative moment, a curious and adventurous fox appears to inspect whether anyone has left scraps of food behind. It is a beautiful yet wild moment. It makes me realise how fortunate I am to be able to live and give myself moments and journeys like this, so far from my home, even though paradoxically I have always felt that the world is my home. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

I spend Thursday afternoon resting, breathing and cultivating calm, although I do not remain in the room the whole time and go outside with our other team-mate, Francisco.<\/p>

Jordi Guasch has a worrying cough accompanied by mucus, hardly compatible with an attempt on Elbrus. Francisco and I do not venture far from Base Camp and stay at a beautiful viewpoint where, for a moment, we turn into Instagrammers and models. It is a very pleasant place where we let the final rays of sunlight caress us as we contemplate Elbrus for the last time before the summit push. Let\u2019s see what tomorrow has in store for us… <\/p>

We go to bed at 20:30 and are due to wake at 1:00 in the morning, which is usually about the time I go to bed. Unsurprisingly, I do not sleep for a single minute, although I try to relax, rest and remain calm. I hear Jordi Guasch coughing and can tell he is uncomfortable, and I sense that the full group will not be setting out. <\/p>

One o\u2019clock arrives. Francisco, still relatively inexperienced in international expeditions, is nervous and has already been preparing his equipment for several minutes. Lu\u00eds looks unwell and tells us that he has not slept properly and may stay behind to rest. I reply, in a friendly way, that we have not travelled all the way to Russia only to decide on summit day not to set out, and so I win him back for the cause. There will therefore be three of us, as Jordi will indeed be unable to leave because of his cold. <\/p>

At 3:00 in the morning the snowcat sets off and climbs the slopes until it drops us at 5,100 metres. It is a snow-grooming machine that costs \u20ac150 per person one way and is the option chosen by 90% of mountaineers. Beforehand I have had serious doubts about which boots to wear. My La Sportiva G2s hurt, and personally I would prefer the more flexible La Sportiva Equilibriums, but Ivan talks me out of it, warning me that I will be cold. I half take his advice: G2s on my feet, Equilibriums in my backpack. <\/p>

Getting into a vehicle at 3:00 in the morning at an altitude of 3,888 metres and, 45 minutes later, stepping out at 5,100 metres is a considerable shock to the body, both in terms of oxygen and temperature change. Nevertheless, there are moments in life when the best thing is not to think, and this is one of them. <\/p>

Ivan, our guide, is aware of this, and as soon as we step out of the snowcat he gets us walking in the following order: Ivan at the front, followed by Lu\u00eds; in the middle of this human rope, the person writing these lines; behind the mountaineer-writer, Francisco; and closing the group, assistant guide Mikhail. The pace is fairly high, and we are among the first groups moving upwards. <\/p>

The night is not cold, and it seems that, meteorologically speaking, we are going to have one of the best days of the year. Lu\u00eds initially follows Ivan\u2019s steps confidently, but after about 60 minutes I realise that he is not comfortable. I think the pace is a little too fast and that we stop too infrequently… I miss the \u201cpole pole\u201d of Kilimanjaro. I have always felt that mountain guides can sometimes lack empathy for the pace needed by a \u201cclient\u201d who is not accustomed to altitude. <\/p>

At around 5:30 in the morning we reach 5,300 metres. This is a flat section of the route that allows us to recover some strength before tackling a steep slope with several anchor points. At that precise moment I can see doubt on Lu\u00eds\u2019s face, and he tells Ivan that he does not feel sufficiently safe or confident to tackle the section ahead. I hug him and wish him a safe descent with assistant guide Mikhail. <\/p>

The expedition is reduced to three. I look at Francisco before beginning the rope section and tell him that we are strong enough to make the summit, that we are doing well. With a glance we understand each other: we are going to summit. In the weeks before the trip we developed a strong rapport, and that has continued here in Russia. We are two disciplined people, capable of hard work and highly persistent, who have spent the previous months preparing for the ascent. We are also both highly communicative, and for me that is a key element in building mountain teams. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

On the rope section we tell Ivan that we want a more moderate pace. We do not want to burn ourselves out; we want to enjoy the experience without having to make an excessive effort. The fixed-rope section is the hardest part of the ascent without being super-hard. <\/p>

The first rays of daylight and the mild temperatures make our progress easier. When the fixed-rope section ends we are almost at 5,500 metres, where most mountaineers take a break before making the final push to the summit. I eat a little, drink some fluids and check that my oxygen saturation is 73%, a figure that, given the altitude we are at, does not seem bad at all. <\/p>

The final metres to the summit remind me of Kilimanjaro. There is a flat path where you see people walking in full \u201czombie\u201d mode, but that is not me. I am not in \u201czombie\u201d mode; I am in enjoying-it mode, savouring an ascent that I have managed very, very well. My breathing and cardio feel great, I have no symptoms of altitude sickness, and the only price I am paying is pain in my feet and shins from the stiffness of the La Sportiva G2s. <\/p>

For a few moments my mind has travelled back to Tanzania, to Kilimanjaro, but I return to the present: I am in Russia, on Elbrus. I step firmly; I breathe happiness. One step after another. I hear sounds of joy getting closer, I raise my eyes and there it is. Elbrus, crowned by euphoric mountaineers. I celebrate the 5,642 metres of the roof of Russia, the roof of continental Europe, my 35th Top Summit, with enormous joy and intensity. I embrace the person I never doubted would be unstoppable in his pursuit of the summit. Francisco thoroughly deserved this Elbrus, and I am very happy for him. He is humble, noble, hard-working and a man of strong values. He is also a man of faith. The Cristo de Jumilla accompanied us all the way to the summit too. The card bearing the image of Christ and the pin he gave us will remain in my backpack forever, present on all future expeditions. <\/p>

On a personal level, after failing to summit Ojos del Salado and Aconcagua, it is an immense joy to stand on a high-altitude summit again. Yet this summit brings me an even greater sense of happiness because the Russian \u201carena\u201d carries an additional difficulty due to the country\u2019s characteristics, peculiarities and the moment it is going through. I am happy to have given myself a life experience in this part of the planet. That vision I had on the flight back from Argentina to Barcelona has materialised. Sometimes you must take one step back in order to move forward, and I have handled the altitude of Elbrus perfectly. That fills me with confidence. <\/p>

Once the summit celebrations have been immortalised, changing my footwear becomes a priority because the La Sportiva G2s are torturing me and have caused multiple open wounds on my feet and shins. I suffer on the descent despite changing boots, but I do not care: pain is temporary and glory is eternal. I will remember this summit forever, and above all this journey. <\/p>

When I travelled to Russian Elbrus, I was very aware that the journey contained several summits: some physical and others metaphorical. Travelling through a country with multiple restrictions is no easy undertaking. During my stay I experienced the extent to which certain restrictions could affect everyday actions such as accessing money, communicating or using certain services. All of this made me realise how profoundly certain political decisions can affect a person\u2019s freedom and autonomy. <\/p>

Once back at our hotel in Terskol, we experienced that feeling of vulnerability, of fragility… a feeling that had worried me as the trip approached, even though I had tried not to give it too much importance. We received the news that our flight out of Russia had been cancelled and that there were no further flights scheduled to Tbilisi, Georgia. <\/p>

Lu\u00eds commented that the proximity of the presidential elections \u2014 just one week away \u2014 had led to Russian airports becoming potential targets for terrorist attacks. True or false, we will never know. The reality is that we left Russian territory overland on a nine-hour journey that took us across the Caucasus and through first the Russian and then the Georgian border. <\/p>

It was nine hours of observation through the window of a van, from which we were able to contemplate some of the most beautiful scenery my eyes have ever seen. It was also an observation of contrasts: the decline of one system, the Russian one, and the rise of another \u2014 Georgia seemed to radiate change, development, prosperity, dynamism, construction and growth. During the days I spent in Russia, I often had the feeling of being in a country trapped in time, marked by rigidity, oppression and fear, and immersed in a war that imposes an enormous human and social cost on its population. What surprised me most, however, was the silence: during an entire week in the country, nobody we met spoke about it. <\/p>

Thank you to the Russian people for looking after me, for being generous and kind to me, and for giving me this gigantic travel adventure. I smile when, with my feet finally on Georgian soil, my bank card allows me to make a payment.
