It had been a while since we headed for a Top Summit. Between Ben Nevis and this expedition to Mount Olympus, a pandemic has passed through which has limited the mobility of humanity for a period of 2 years. We take this trip with great enthusiasm and with \u00d2scar we plan a mix of trips in which we will travel between Classical Greece and the wildest Greece with the intention of reaching Mount Olympus, which at 2,918 meters is the highest point in the country.<\/p>

We landed in Athens and for a practical matter we will start our “tour” in this city. I find it a sad, decadent and dirty city with multiple “graffiti” on the walls of the buildings as well as very chaotic and stressful when driving. The strong economic crisis in the country and the policies of economic restriction and control applied by the European Union in recent years are intuited and made clear by observing people and the little optimism they spread. On the other hand, we were pleasantly surprised by the authentically Mediterranean local cuisine and we really enjoyed local dishes such as “musaka” or “baklava”. Of what is strictly our cultural visit in the city, nothing to highlight beyond the visit to the “Acropolis” and the rest of the historical sites that remind us that Greece was a power at the time; very far from where we are now. We say goodbye to the day with a dinner on the terrace of our hotel that has privileged views of the historical complex of the city that presents an illuminated version at night.<\/p>

The second day of our trip leaves the capital of the country behind and we head to the north of the country, near Thessaloniki, specifically to Prionia. It takes almost 5 hours of driving across the country to reach the point that will be the beginning of our excursion that we have scheduled in 2 days.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

We start walking around 4:00 p.m. from the mentioned point of Prionia, which is the classic and most crowded itinerary. We are talking about a height of 1,081 meters with the aim of reaching the Spilios Agapitos refuge at 2,100 meters around 7:00 p.m. to have enough margin with dinner hours. The route is about 8 km that although they are ascents, they are very gradual and grateful, passing through beautiful forests. At about 15 km to our shoulders the landscape is blue since we are not very far from the Aegean Sea.<\/p>

In the shelter you can breathe activity, energy…we shared dinner with a young German couple, although it didn’t take long for us to go to sleep tired from the 5-hour drive in the morning and the hiker in the afternoon.
For a change I have not had my best night of rest and it is that whenever I sleep in a crowd it is difficult for me to have immunity against external noises.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

From the refuge, take the Koft\u00f3 trail, which, unlike yesterday’s, is steep and physically demanding, and very soon, as we gain altitude, we are left without the company of vegetation. We share part of the 2.5 km to the Plateau with another German couple to whom we explain our \u201cTop Summits of the World\u201d project and they open the doors to its summit, the Zugspitze. At that time we did not know that this couple had acted as excellent ambassadors and that next year we would touch the golden cross on the Teutonic summit at 2,982 meters high.<\/p>

Arriving at the Plateau, there is a dispersion of the walkers and it is that our objective presents a technical part with which not everyone dares. It is true that from the Meseta the path becomes more complex and concentration and alertness levels must be increased. While it is true that we find someone tied up and wearing a helmet, it really can be done without. We really enjoyed this more dynamic section and with a greater orographic variety… the table of the “Gods” is not for everyone and this is the message they want to give especially with the last wall before reaching the white flag and blue. This last wall presents a steep slope and requires us to climb amusingly.<\/p>

The house of the 12 Olympic gods stands spectacularly before us and opens its doors for us. From above some privileged views of the set of mountains that merges with the sea just 15 km away in a straight line. It is always a special feeling to step on the roof of a country and as always we take many positive things with us, people I have met, new ideas of countries to visit…
